We all know about the importance of classroom management. We are constantly reminded about it from our first teacher preparation course in college, all the way through in-services as a professional educator. However, the physical education space rarely gets its due when talking about managing classes. In order to most effectively serve the youth in our classes we need to keep in mind both the similarities and differences in traditional classroom management compared to managing a class in a gymnasium or similar space.
Research is clear that class management both in a traditional setting and in a physical education setting is an on-going process that must consistently be honed and maintained. “There is some truth in the adage from veteran teachers who say, ‘If you don’t have control, then you can’t teach’.” (Effective Classroom Management in Physical Education: Strategies for Beginning Teachers – D. Grube, S. Ryan, S. Lowell, & A. Stringer)
